It forms when quartz crystallises from silica rich fluids, most commonly in hydrothermal veins and in cavities within volcanic rocks such as basalt. Like all quartz, amethyst has a hardness of 7 on the Mohs scale. The purple colour is caused by trace amounts of iron within the quartz crystal structure,
